Not a Refrigerator

I compressed all the redundant processes. I killed the dashboards. I reduced the entry point to something ultra-minimalist — an interaction so fast it barely registers as an action. It forced me to confront a harsh truth about product design: Builders are obsessed with the *process*. We spend weeks writing elegant logic, and subconsciously, we want the user to see the gears turning. We want credit for the work. But users only care about the *result*. They don't want to see the gears. They just want a clean desktop and a clear mind. The creator's logic is entirely disconnected from the user's reality. A few weeks later, I handed Erin the rebuilt version of Mint. She triggered the app. The files sorted themselves instantly. The interface vanished as quickly as it appeared. She didn't have to read a single line of documentation. She smiled and looked at me. "Finally. Not a refrigerator." --- Good design doesn't ask for the user's attention; it respects their time. If someone has to learn how to use your tool to reduce their friction, you haven't built a solution. You've just built a different kind of chore.
