The Mess We All Share

Every Mac user has a version of the same problem. The specifics differ, but the shape is identical: files accumulate faster than you can organize them, and by the time you notice, the mess is overwhelming. ### A Developer's Mess If you write code for a living, your disk is full of things you never asked for. Xcode generates gigabytes of DerivedData for every project you build. Node.js scatters node_modules folders across your filesystem like dandelion seeds. Docker images pile up. Old .git repositories from abandoned experiments linger. Build artifacts from tools you tried once and forgot about. None of this is visible in Finder. You just see the "Your disk is almost full" warning one day and wonder where 80 GB went. ### A Photographer's Mess If you shoot photos, your mess looks completely different. RAW files with sidecar XMPs. Lightroom preview caches that silently grow to 20 GB. Multiple exports of the same image — full resolution, web resolution, cropped, uncropped. Rejected shots that never got deleted. Video clips from the same session scattered across three different folders. You know you should organize by date, by project, by format. But there are 40,000 files and your Saturday is not long enough. ### Everyone's Downloads Folder And then there is the Downloads folder. The universal junk drawer. PDFs you read once. Installers you already ran. Screenshots you shared and forgot about. Zip files whose contents you extracted months ago. Duplicate files with "(1)" suffixes because the browser did not ask before downloading again. Every few months you open it, stare at the chaos, close it, and tell yourself you will deal with it later. ### Why Apple Storage Makes It Urgent Mac storage is not cheap. Every gigabyte costs money — real money, baked into the purchase price of your machine. When Apple warns you that your disk is full, the pressure is immediate. You can buy a new machine, pay for iCloud, or spend a weekend manually cleaning up. None of these options are good. The first is expensive. The second is recurring. The third is tedious and you will be right back where you started in three months. ### What We Wanted We wanted something that understands the difference between a developer's mess and a photographer's mess. Something that knows DerivedData is safe to delete but your .git folder is not. Something that can tell the difference between a RAW file you are editing and a preview cache you forgot about. Not a dumb rule that says "delete files older than 30 days." Not a glorified disk usage chart. Something with genuine understanding of what files are, who they belong to, and whether they matter. We wanted something that watches your folders the way a good assistant would — quietly, continuously, moving things to the right place without being asked. You teach it your preferences once: screenshots go here, invoices go there, disk images get trashed after installation. Then it remembers. Forever. Different people have different tolerance for automation. Some want aggressive auto-sorting. Some want to approve every move. The tool should accommodate both without making either feel like a second-class citizen. That is why we are building Mint. Not because the world needs another file manager. But because it needs a file organizer that actually understands files — and, more importantly, understands you.
