What macOS can do on its own
macOS includes enough tools for a careful first pass, especially when the main problem is a few obvious large files or unused applications.
- Open System Settings and review the storage recommendations and category totals before removing anything.
- In Finder, inspect Downloads and other personal folders in List view, show file sizes, and sort from largest to smallest.
- Remove only files you recognize, then leave them in Trash until you have confirmed that current projects and applications still work.

Boundaries and safety checks
A scanner can identify likely candidates, but it cannot know whether an old-looking artifact is part of your current work.
- Review duplicates by path and context; identical content can still be intentionally stored in more than one location.
- Keep backups for irreplaceable data, and do not treat Trash or Mint Undo as a backup system.
- App Store cleanup is limited to supported user locations and the folders or startup disk you authorize. Direct and Setapp use the access you grant across supported whole-Mac locations.

Does Mint delete cleanup items permanently?
Cleanup recommends and defaults to moving approved items to Trash. Permanent deletion is available only through an explicit choice.
Is every cache safe to remove?
No. Caches can be regenerated, but removing them can sign you out, discard offline data, or slow the next launch. Review the owning app and path before cleanup.
Can Mint clean the whole startup disk from the App Store?
A startup-disk grant authorizes the App Store edition, but findings remain limited to supported locations in the signed-in user’s home and any separately approved folders.
