What macOS can do on its own

Finder can handle a small folder well when you give it a deliberate structure. Start manually before adding any automation.

1. Open the folder in Finder, switch to List view, and sort by Kind, Date Added, or Date Modified to expose the largest groups.
2. Create a small set of destination folders whose names will still make sense six months from now. Avoid deep nesting at the start.
3. Move one group at a time, then use Finder search or a Smart Folder when you need a reusable view rather than another physical folder.
4. Use Shortcuts or Automator only for deterministic rules you can explain, and test the rule on copies before pointing it at live files.

When Mint helps

Mint is useful when the folder refills faster than a manual routine can keep up. The folder you add is the boundary; Mint does not organize outside it.

Boundaries and safety checks

Organization changes paths, so it can still disrupt links, scripts, or collaborative folders even though it does not delete files.

• Do not auto-organize package folders, source repositories, synced team folders, or app libraries unless their path rules are understood.
• Mint records file operations for 90 days; Undo depends on the source and moved item still being available.
• The Mac App Store edition works inside folders you approve. Direct and Setapp can work across supported locations after the required access is granted.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mint organize my entire Mac automatically?

No. You add the folders Mint may manage and choose an organization style and automation level for each one. Folders without a configured rule remain manual.

Does file organization upload document contents?

File analysis and scan results stay on the Mac. Licensing, downloads, optional website analytics, and distribution can still use network services.

Can I undo an organization run?

Eligible moves appear in Mint’s 90-day journal with batch-level Undo. Recovery requires the underlying source and moved file to still exist.
